The Serbian Lion

Serbia has a national cricket team. The man who runs it is from England.

Robin Vitas is the son of a refugee who was forced out of Yugoslavia at fifteen and arrived with nothing but the family name. Cricket was Robin’s own, a game his father never played and it carried him through county grounds and league titles.

Robin lost his father in June 2020. George had put the family name on a building in Peterborough and made it mean something. Within the year, Serbia found that same name and called. Robin pulled on the shirt for the first time exactly two years after George died.

The Serbian Lion follows Robin from that call to the first international win in Serbian cricket history and into the job he holds now: teaching the game to a country that never grew up with it, in the land his father was forced to leave. Serbia never had a lion. He brought his own.
